Medical Video Production In The Operating Room
Product Managers, Marketing Directors,
Educators,
Marketing Communications Directors, & Convention Floor Coordinators
Above all else, Surgeons are visual professionals.
Who has ever heard of a blind surgeon? Surgeons use their eyes to operate as much as their hands and instrumentation. In fact, by nature most surgeons are as acutely visual as graphic artists, photographers, and filmmakers. Many of them spend countless dollars and vacation time visiting champion surgeons, just to see them operate and learn new procedures. Seeing the procedure is the next closest thing to performing the procedure, as one notable teaching surgeon would say.For the marketer, this means that there is a golden opportunity to reach this visual market, through visual media and multimedia, that responds to the needs and interests of the surgeon on multiple levels. Video programs, animation, artwork, and convention floor displays have historically yielded excellent results for most every marketing strategy.

Video News Releases, Documentary, & TV CommercialsAt Plexus our philosophy is very simple. We strive to take as much work out of the product managers hands as possible. Those who have worked with us know we have the expertise in all phases of surgical video production from A to Z. That is why our clients keep coming back to us over and over.
The first question most product managers ask is can Plexus get the shots? You know that even exceptional videographers miss the shots in surgery all the time. It takes someone who thinks like a surgeon to get great shots and know what is coming next, and to know how to communicate with surgeons at critical times. At Plexus we are not just video guys, but experienced surgical technicians as well. Here are just a few examples of some of the shots that Plexus has captured in the past. Please pardon the quality of these stills, as they are taken from 72 dpi video and don't look near as stunning as the actual video tape:
Saphenous Vein Graft Anastomosed to Aorta in Coronary Artery Bypass

Shooting Open Heart Surgery requires multiple cameras trained at several areas of the body at once. With the proper jib arm, getting all the fine detail without having to ask the surgeon to pause is essential.
Harvesting the Patellar Tendon for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

Small incisions sometimes require more attention from the Director and Camera Crew than large ones. When teaching surgical technique, multiple camera angles and detailed description are essential.
Aortic Graft Anastomosed to Aorta

Utilizing a remote pan-tilt camera head on the jib arm allows us to do this without even touching the camera or arm.
Graft Preparation for a Double Bone Plug Medial Meniscal Allograft Transplantation

Teaching at the back-table or mayo stand is just as important as teaching the surgery. Cameras must be repositioned quickly, since the patients are still under anesthesia.
Here is an example of a Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty where two vantage points are used at all times during the case to get every detail possible. One camera is at the side and the other over the top.

Animation and artwork are integral parts of surgical video, and at Plexus we have worked with it extensively for programs that are either impossible to visualize or for demonstrating device deployment.

Why compromise your program when it costs less to get quality? Plexus Communications wants to be a part of your team. Please give us a call, or since you are here, send us an Email. Here are just some of the other ways Plexus can help you on your next video production:
- After the product manager arranges the case, Plexus contacts the hospitals and surgeons and represents your company with integrity.
- Plexus writes scripts that only need revisions from surgeons and product managers.
- Plexus takes the labor of scripting out of the surgeons' hands, and is often ready with the script in his/her words so s/he can read when we arrive for production.
- Product managers and surgeons have never had to view window dubs for us to suggest full program edits, only fix-its.
- Product managers and surgeons have yet to sit and edit full programs with us. We usually send a window dub of the edited program, and fix-its can be made within a single day.
- Animation, artwork, and other production items are easily viewed on-line (via the internet) so instant decisions can be made by clients.
- Plexus knows the pronunciation of medical terminology so product managers or surgeons do not have to be present for pro-voice reads.
